The Multiple that Occupies Space

_the multiple that occupies space:

The Multiple that Occupies Space is a publication that gathers and expands the contents of the VIII International Forum of Creation on the Border, held in Pontevedra in May 2024. Through previously unpublished texts, visual documentation, and curatorial essays, the book offers an interdisciplinary perspective on contemporary printmaking as an expanded, installative, and transdisciplinary practice. It brings together the five branches of the event —Synergies, Symbiosis, Germinal, Interferences, and Resonances— and includes introductory and concluding chapters that open new lines of inquiry into multiple art and its relationship with space.

_origin

This book presents the project The Multiple that Occupies Space, developed across multiple venues in the city of Pontevedra as part of the VIII International Forum of Creation on the Border. The initiative brought together exhibitions, lectures, and public interventions in collaboration with numerous institutions, including Fundación RAC, Concello de Pontevedra, VacíoCero, Universidade de Vigo, and other cultural and academic entities. Published under the editorial imprint Sendemà, the book compiles the contents generated during the forum and organizes them into a volume that combines visual documentation, curatorial texts, and previously unpublished chapters. Its structure reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the project and proposes an expanded reading of contemporary printmaking as a plural and complex practice.

_Framework

This publication approaches contemporary printmaking from a transdisciplinary perspective, understanding multiple art as an expanded field that unfolds within space and transforms it. The volume is situated at the intersection of artistic practice, technical research, and critical thought, offering a plural reading of current graphic processes—detached from their traditional supports and open to new methodologies of production and exhibition. Printmaking is presented as a discipline capable of inhabiting, interfering with, and subverting space, by conceiving the matrix not merely as a tool for reproduction but as a generative element in its own right. The book’s approach is articulated through curatorial texts, theoretical essays, and visual documentation that together provide insight into the evolution of graphic media in dialogue with other contemporary practices.

“Based on a heterogeneous selection of local, national, and international artists, the project’s guiding thread offers an interdisciplinary perspective on printmaking, expanding the understanding of a medium traditionally associated with limiting methodologies and exhibition formats. The paradigm of print on paper trapped between glass and wooden frames has given way to new forms of expression that have helped break molds and stereotypes.”

_Contents Overview

The book is structured into seven sections that trace the different phases of the project, from its conceptual framework to its future projections. It includes curatorial introductions, theoretical essays, and visual documentation of the exhibitions, lectures, and public interventions held in Pontevedra. Each chapter opens a line of reflection on printmaking as an expanded practice, with particular attention to its spatial, installative, and public dimensions.
More than sixty contributors—artists, researchers, and cultural agents—participate in the volume, edited by Ana Soler and published under the Sendemà imprint. The book brings together diverse voices that contribute to rethinking multiple art through the heterogeneity of its processes and formats.

The publication is available for free download in an open-access digital version through Investigo, the institutional repository of the Universidade de Vigo.
